Grocery shopping: Vegetable prices decline at Sunday bazaars

According to the market committee list, onion prices witnessed a 15 to 25 per cent decline

Prices of most vegetables either declined or remained the same in weekly bazaars on Sunday.


According to the market committee list, onion prices witnessed a 15 to 25 per cent decline. The new price was Rs40 to Rs45 per kilogramme down from Rs50 to Rs52 per kg last week.

Tomato prices declined by 12 per cent to Rs53 to Rs57 per kg.

Potato (new) prices were Rs25 to Rs28. Potatoes from cold storage sold for Rs11 to Rs13 per kg. Garlic (local) prices rose by seven per cent over last week. Greengrocers said the supply of desi garlic had declined. The price of imported garlic remained at Rs150 to Rs160 per kg. Imported ginger prices also dropped by 10 per cent as compared to last week. It sold for Rs50 to Rs55 per kg.

Local spinach prices also declined by 20 to 25 per cent as compared to last week. At Sunday bazaars, it was sold for Rs15 to Rs20 per kg. Another variety was available for Rs6 to Rs8 per kg. Fenugreek (methi) prices fell to Rs10 to Rs13 per kg. The price of green peas declined by 45 to 55 per cent. They sold at Rs45 to Rs65 per kg. Last week, their prices were from Rs100 to Rs110. Prices of brinjals remained stable at Rs20 to Rs23 per kg, bitter gourd Rs55 to Rs65 per kg, imported lemon Rs40 to Rs50 per kg and okra Rs35 to Rs40 per kg. People shopping at the Sunday bazaars said that they were satisfied with the arrangements. “Surprisingly, prices in Sunday bazaar are lower compared to the open market and quality of the products is slightly better. It seems government efforts are having an effect,” Faiza, a shopper, said.

Inflation picks up, clocks in at 1.6%

Wajid, another shopper, said that prices of most edibles were affordable. He expressed satisfaction with the quality of goods. However, he complained that some vendors did not return the change. “In the official price list, vegetables are priced at Rs13, Rs15, Rs17, Rs23 etc. However, most vendors do not return the change, claiming that they do not have coins,” he said.
