KARACHI: The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of the Sindh police claimed to have arrested the Karachi chief of the banned Hizbut Tehreer (HuT) during a raid in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on Friday.

The suspect, Siham Qamar, was working as a deputy general manager at K-Electric, said CTD Operation-I incharge SSP Usman Bajwa, addressing a press conference at his office in Police Headquarters, Garden, on Friday evening.

"Qamar is a mechanical engineer and had access to educational institutions where he was spotted regularly," said Bajwa. "He used to attend social gatherings of influential people and propagate his group's agenda."

According to Bajwa, Qamar was given the task of recruiting qualified students to HuT and used to help his arrested comrades get released.

This was the second such arrest of a high-profile HuT member in Karachi during the Karachi operation. Earlier, HuT senior member Owais Raheel, an IBA graduate who used to teach at Szabist, was arrested from Boat Basin in the first week of October.

The CTD also arrested two alleged target killers, Munir Ahmed Gopang and Usman Ghani alias Gutka. Gopang, a member of the banned sectarian outfit, Sipah-e-Muhammad Pakistan's Khairpur chapter, was accused of attacking Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat's rally in Gambat in 2014 when a participant was killed.

Also, to increase your knowledge, HuT is NOT banned in the UK, Lebanon, and Indonesia. There are millions of followers in Indonesia who spread the words of Allah without any fear. But it is banned in Pakistan for spreading the words of Allah. Why? Give me one good reason why is it banned!

HT members centered themselves on intellectual debates and strongly oppose material/arms struggle... If Pakistan is to be built on pure democracy, one should cherish and perform freedom of Speech.

Until and unless both India and Pakistan do not revert to their culture and values to the days before the British Baboons landed on their shores from European jungles....THey will never be masters in their own homes.

ahmed | 8 years ago | Reply Pakistan government must raise HT issue with UK, where HT headquarter is based. They target educated people who can then infiltrate into different organizations. They must be banned to carry out there activities in universities.

Gutka | 8 years ago | Reply Despite my strong differences with Hizb ut Tahrir, I have to say, Hizb prisoners are regarded as prisoners of conscience by Amnesty International. Their members regularly engage in healthy debates with renowned intellectuals (Hint: look up "Uthman Badar vs Lawrence Krauss"). Hizb ut Tahrir holds regular open conferences in countries like UK, USA, and Australia.

They dramatize the whole situation rather than seeking to understand the truth. He was one of the most charming people I have ever met. Hardworking, determined and very understanding. Had the pleasure of working with him and he was a motivating boss. May he be released soon
