ISLAMABAD: China has assured that if India is allowed to get the membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) it will go all out to ensure that Pakistan also joins the group.

The assurance was given to Islamabad during the visit of a high-level delegation headed by President Mamnoon Hussain to Beijing recently.

Nuclear war between India and Pakistan not as unlikely as you think

“The issue was discussed at length and Pakistan highlighted its point of view saying that it has equal right to join the group for fulfilling its requirement for peaceful use of nuclear technology,” diplomatic sources told The Express Tribune.

Islamabad took the plea that if it is deprived of the NSG membership and New Delhi is allowed to join it then it will be discrimination and lead to creating an imbalance in the region.

“China, being member of the group and holding the veto power, assured Pakistan that it will take all measures so that it also becomes the member of the NSG,” they said, adding, “If India is allowed to join NSG and Pakistan is deprived of the membership of the group, Beijing will veto the move to block Indian entry.”

Pakistan will become fifth largest nuclear power by 2025: report

According to sources, Pakistan was aware of the fact after it came to know about the launching of a quiet diplomatic move for inducting India into the club of nuclear trading nations.

“The NSG chairman has recently visited New Delhi and held meeting with the Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj as part of a diplomatic effort to build a consensus to admit India into the group in its annual meeting next June,” observed a security analyst.

He said Pakistan aspires to join the NSG but its accession appears to be a tough sell as the major members of the group don’t support its move.

Pakistan likely to secure civil nuclear deal with US: report

It is pertinent to mention here that membership of the 48-nation group would bring India into the nuclear fold 41 years after it tested its first nuclear bomb.

    Nothing but hot air.

China didn`t veto the Nuke Deal earlier. Nor did it back Pakistan during Kargil war. It has more to gain from India than Pakistan.Recommend

deprived of the NSG membership and New
Delhi is allowed to join it then it
will be discrimination and lead to
creating an imbalance in the region

Quite literally, a very immature diplomacy at work here. The members are admitted to NSG based on their previous records of proliferation and safety, not on basis of “to create balance in the region”.

Pakistan having sold nuclear secrets to rogue nations Libya, north Korea and Iran is something that world will never forget, because the whole world is still paying the price for it. And saying that not giving Pakistan NSG membership will lead to imbalance in the region is like shooting oneself in the foot. Are you trying to blackmail NSG members that if not given nuclear technology you will produce more nuclear weapons to deal with “Indian aggression”?

And no two countries on the face of this planet are “equals”, its a reality one has to accept. In no corner of the world Pakistan and India are considered as “equals”. The Islamic and non-Islamic worlds, see both our nations differently. Ironically, its only we, both Indians and Pakistanis, who can see each other as equals if we leave behind the ugly past.

The only way Pakistan can be admitted to NSG is that they limit their stock piles to current levels, limit the nuclear weapons to only strategic level, and not be swayed over or be paranoid over what’s happening in India. Pakistan should remain calm and composed even if India gets NSG membership. And show to the world that they are a mature, trusted democracy, which is committed to use of nuclear tech for peaceful purposes only, and not for some imaginary parity with India.

And lastly, India has over the decades transformed vastly into becoming a new industrialised county. There are now indian heavy engineering industries which are capable of either exporting their wares for nuclear power plants or becoming sub-contractors to global nuclear power plant manufacturing giants, which is what Indian entities like L & T, Godrej & Boyce, Walchangnagar Industries etc etc are on the way to becoming in partnership with their Russian & French counterparts. We are also now capable of developing our own technologies, may be not as superior as the European or american ones, but definitely, qualified technologies. Hence, It made sense to the world to have India as a member of NSG, than not to have.

The question is, does Pakistan have such a industrial capability that match India?

    No – is the answer.Recommend

Ok noted now lets see how China helps pakistan, btw as far as i know China alone cant help pakistan.I mean here is a scenario currently:
    India-support of all except China
    Pakistan-support of none except China

So this what the current exact position of all. Therefore in that case India with majority support will get through NSG as China will eventually back off as it is alone in its standing but in case of pakistan, pakistan has to convince all members.Only getting Chinese support and assurance is like hitting a head in a wall and will never bore any result.Recommend

NSG is not UNSC. NSG has 48 countries. Even if one country says no, then you won’t be admitted into NSG. USA will certainly say “BIG NO” for Pakistan to be admitted into NSG. Just remember in this very news website, people were all gung-ho about USA giving Nuke deal which in fact turned out be a deal to limit stockpiles and have Uncle Sam trace every nuke Pakistan has. If India gets into NSG, then India will forever say “VERY BIG NO” for Pakistan to be admitted into NSG. If India gets in, Pakistan is out forever unless some miracle happens where both countries aren’t at war at each other. Recommend

West is facilitating India to join NSG for only economic purposes. They want Indian market to sell their nuclear technology. These states undermine the repercussions of auch waiver to India. It will fuel a nuclear arms race as foreign nuclear material will dump into Indian weapons development. Country specific waiver is also hurting the efforts for global nuclear disarmament. Recommend

Firstly there is no such Veto in NSG as in UN. 2ndly China already supported India for NSG with conditions. 3rd There is no such news in international media expect Pakistani domain links. Fourth consensus is needed for NSG membership. As of now only 2 countries are opposing India’s membership I.e. Switzerland and Netherlands. Earlier it was Japan as well but now Japan is supporting India. China is not one of them but tries to isolate India but failing to do so. Diplomatic efforts have been done to make sure India’s entry into NSG club during NSG annual meeting i.e. On June 2016.Recommend

This business of supplicating others for membership has an inherent low probability of success. A strategy with a far higher probability of success would be to signal a national resolve to disseminate nuclear technology to strategic allies, such as Turkey. If the objection to Pakistan joining the Suppliers Club is that it had proliferated in the past, and if its good behaviour since that time counts for nothing, then Pakistan may as well be hung for a sheep as for a lamb. It should threaten to go full steam ahead with passing nuclear & missile technology to Turkey. It should also threaten to resume nuclear tests, particularly of thermonuclear warheads (most of the work for this has already been done since the miniaturised warheads Pakistan has designed for its cruise missiles and tactical nukes would serve as ideal primers for the thermonuclear second stages.

Our friends from bharat are completely missing 2 things here. One, NSG is irrelevant, a country with nuclear arms never will be, its practical only. Second, cribbing out China is textbook too, China Pakistan relation is practical.
