ISLAMABAD: An exhibition of mixed media, acrylics on canvas, and digital print and silkscreen printing by seven distinguished Cuban artists was displayed on Friday.

Works of Vladimir de Leon Llaguno, Ibrahim Miranda Ramos, Samuel Riera Mendez, Alberto Lescay Merencio, Liang Dominguez Fong, Karla Rodriguez Castell and Liudmila Lopez Dominguez were put up at the group exhibition.

Cuban art is globally known for its diverse cultural blend of African, South American, European and North American design reflecting the diverse demographic of the island. Cuban artists are believed to create some of the most fascinating and exciting yet contemporary and innovative work of art across the world.

Liudmila Lopez Dominguez, one of the artists featured in the exhibition, told The Express Tribune that even though there is a major difference between Cuban art and Pakistani art, she has received an overwhelming response. “Cuban art is more contemporary while Pakistani art is towards the traditional side,” Liudmila added.

She further said that Pakistani artists are gradually growing and are producing contemporary works of art. Particularly speaking about the exhibition, she said she felt like Islamabad enjoys Cuban art, which is why she brought art works by distinguished artists with her for this exhibition. “The best thing about this exhibit is that it features different generations of artists; the youngest artist displaying his work in this exhibit is 22 years old whereas the eldest is 70 years of age,” she added.

“This exhibition is a win-win situation for both; it gives Islamabad a taste of Cuban art and gives a chance to Cuban artists to expand their work and exhibit at varied places,” said Liudmila.

The display gave away a very funky appeal and touch to the exhibit reminding one of the works of the famous Andy Warhol displayed at MOMA in New York City. The group artwork of different kinds of funky shoes in bright colours was particularly eye-catching.

Among the works displayed in the exhibit, Liang Dominguez’s pieces displayed great depth and detail where she used inflated ink on canvas to create an intricate and textured look.
