Enforcing the law: Police arrest six alleged militants

KARACHI:

The Counter-Terrorism Department claimed on Monday to have arrested six militants affiliated with banned outfits, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.

The suspects were arrested in raids in different parts of the city, the police said, adding that a sizeable quantity of arms, ammunition and explosives were seized from their possession. Tariqul Islam, the incharge of the Armed Militants Intelligence Group of the CTD, said in a press release that the arrested suspects were operatives of TTP's Khan Zaman faction and the LeJ's Asif Chotu group.



The suspects were identified as Niaz alias Sarwar, Habibur Rehman, Hafiz Munir Ahmed, Tabassumur Rehman, Ijaz Hussain and Umer Farooq.

Two rifles, six pistols, around 20 rounds and two hand grenades were seized from the suspects, the police said.

During initial interrogation, the suspects have confessed to committing several robberies and extortion activities in the city, the police added. Investigations are underway. More revelations are expected. The arrests have been made a day after two policemen were shot dead while on duty near the Daewoo Bus Terminal off Super Highway. The responsibility for the attack was claimed by the TTP in a statement.
