A top leader of the National Party (NP) was killed and four of his party colleagues seriously injured on Thursday when their vehicle swerved off the road and fell into a ditch near Bela.

NP secretary general Dr Yaseen Baloch and four other members of the ruling party in Balochistan were en route to Karachi for a party rally. Dr Yaseen was one of the founders of the National Party and also served as a member of the National Assembly. Recently, he was elected as central general secretary of the party.

Police quoting eyewitnesses said that the accident occurred when a motorcycle suddenly appeared from the opposite side of the road. “The driver of the car apparently tried to avoid hitting the motorcyclist coming from the wrong side and lost control of the vehicle which veered off the road and fell into a ditch,” said a police official. The crash killed Dr Yaseen Baloch on the spot while other party leaders Haji Saleh Baloch, father of Health Minister Rehmat Saleh Baloch, Mehrab Khan and Shabbir Ahmed were seriously injured.

Rescue workers and police rushed to the spot and shifted the injured and the deceased to the Bela District Hospital.

The motorcyclist, identified as Jumma Gul, was shifted to Karachi due to his critical injuries. Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch and NP president Hasil Bizinjo have expressed deep grief and sorrow over the tragic accident.

A spokesman for the provincial coalition government, Jan Muhammad Buledi, along with party workers, reached the hospital in Bela and took care of the legal formalities.
