ABBOTABAD:

A man and a teenage girl allegedly committed suicide in a remote village of Galiyat on Saturday. According to police, the deceased have been identified as 18-year-old Muniza Bibi*, a resident of Barengali village, and Bilal Rasheed, who hailed from Tapla village; they were closely related.

It is believed that they took the drastic step because their families were vehemently opposed to their decision to get married. However, the girl’s family has denied that Muniza Bibi and Bilal were in love with each other.

Locals told The Express Tribune the deceased were in love with each other but Bilal’s parents got him engaged to his cousin from the same village. They said Muniza Bibi visited Bilal’s house on Friday and tried to persuade his parents to let them tie the knot. However, they refused to accept the marriage. Subsequently, the purported couple consumed poisonous tea and died. Bilal’s parents shifted their bodies to Benazir Shaheed Hospital.

Police cited doctors as saying the deceased had consumed a heavy dose of poison and died before they could receive medical attention.

“Samples from their stomach would be sent to a laboratory in Peshawar for chemical analysis,” a police official said.
