Premier lauds Sadiq's role in upholding democratic traditions in parliament

RAIWIND: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday formally announced Sardar Ayaz Sadiq as a nominee for the National Assembly speaker's slot, while discussing political matters with the former speaker.

Sadiq, the former National Assembly speaker, took on Friday the oath as a Member of the National Assembly following his victory during by-polls in Lahore’s NA-122 constituency.

Following the oath taking, acting speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi announced that secret balloting to elect a new speaker will take place on November 9.

PM Nawaz, following the announcement lauded Sadiq's role in upholding democratic traditions in parliament.

"I am confident that Ayaz Sadiq will maintain the same standards in the upcoming years," PM Nawaz said before the meeting between the premier and Sadiq concluded.

Further, while the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz nominated Sadiq as their candidate for the speaker’s slot, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) nominated Shafqat Mehmood to contest Monday’s election. Lawmakers from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas have nominated GG Jamal as their candidate for the slot.

Election for speaker expected as Ayaz Sadiq returns to NA

Earlier, Sadiq had been unseated after his election from NA-122 was declared as null and void by an election tribunal on August 22. PTI chief Imran Khan had challenged Sadiq’s election victory.
