The suspects arrested by CTD were identified as Riaz Butt and Sharjeel. Their arrests were disclosed during a press conference held by CTD SSP Junaid Shaikh at his office on Thursday evening. Butt, belonging to the Jabbar Jhengu faction of the Uzair Baloch group of Lyari gangsters, was accused of killing at least 24 people belonging to the Urdu speaking community and a rival gangster group in Lyari. SSP Shaikh said that, during initial investigations, Butt confessed that he, along with his companions, killed at least 11 Urdu speaking people after singling them out on a passenger bus in Lyari during an ethnic clash between the Baloch and Urdu speaking communities in 2011. The remaining victims are those he killed over refusal to pay extortion money or those who belonged to a rival group in Lyari.
Sharjeel was said to be associated with a political party and confessed to having killed at least 12 people, particularly those belonging to rival political parties and on an ethnic basis. Weapons were also recovered from their possession and further investigation was underway.
Separately, the Rangers claim to have arrested a couple for their alleged involvement in street crime. The Rangers spokesperson said that a couple was snatching a mobile phone from a citizen near the Bab-e-Najaf Imambargah, adding that a Rangers mobile on a routine patrol caught the couple red handed with the assistance of residents.
A dummy pistol, used for robberies, and looted cash was recovered and the couple were handed over to the police. The arrested accused, Sohail, confessed to the crime, however, his wife denied her involvement. "I admit that I was snatching a cell phone but I had a dummy pistol and my motorcycle has been cleared by the CPLC," Sohail said while in the police lock-up. His wife only admitted that her husband was trying to snatch a cell phone from a citizen. "I left our home with my husband to buy milk and I had no idea about his intention," she claimed. "The people caught him, started beating him up and later handed him over to the police," she related.
