Ameobi’s first-half goal sealed Newcastle’s second win under new boss Alan Pardew and left Martinez’s team just one point above the bottom three. While Newcastle are safely in mid-table, Wigan face a grim struggle to beat the drop.
“We worked hard and were disciplined and did the right things at the right times,” said Pardew.
Meanwhile, Pardew revealed that he may be interested in signing David Beckham. “I’ve made it clear to the chiefs that I need an offensive player,” Pardew told the BBC. “Beckham is a player that could wear a Newcastle shirt – whether we can make that happen is another thing.”
Ferdinand likes United’s bad side
Rio Ferdinand has no qualms about Manchester United making an “ugly” charge for the Premier League title as the leaders look to extend their advantage against Stoke. Ferdinand insists United will take three points in any way to regain the crown.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s team have been anything but fluent so far this term but remain unbeaten in the league with two games in hand.
“You’ve got to dig deep in these games,” said Ferdinand. “You’ve got to win games, it’s as simple as that. I don’t care how we win. Ideally we’d like to play well, but in these situations when you’re not playing at your best, the most important thing is to get the three points and go back to Manchester happy.”
