A dead rat was found inside a Subway sandwich that a customer had ordered in the US.

Matt Jones, who had ordered a teriyaki chicken sandwich, had been watching the staff set about preparing an Italian sub for his friend when he noticed something was wrong.

“I got my drink, turned around and they were in shock like something happened. There was a mouse in there. It was gross,” he told KGW-TV.

“It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, but it’s also the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen. I laughed because I was like, there is no way this just happened,” he added.

Jones and his friend did not press charges against the restaurant. However, they were not very overjoyed when Subway only refunded the cost of their sandwich, which is $6.

In a statement, Subway said, “To be cautious, all of the products in the sandwich unit were disposed of and a thorough cleaning took place, in which the Health Department gave the restaurant a clean bill of health. There were no other complaints made.”

Cheryl Connell, director of Lincoln County Health and Human Services, said there was little chance of someone getting ill from eating food the rat had touched.

Since the news broke, people have been tweeting about it, with some even questioning how a dead rat can be found in the sandwich when it is made in front of the customer.

Mikayla | 8 years ago | Reply I want to point out that one the sandwich does not appear to have been eaten (was the customer dissecting the sandwich?). Two the ingredients were clearly moved around so the rat became visible. These sandwiches are made in front of customers. I think it was a joke either by the customer or employee or even both. People intentionally do things like this to get free food. I am a former employee and remember having specific customers repeatedly make false allegations with/without bringing the food back. They generally received a free sandwich and sincere apology. Although employees are well aware of false allegations. I am not accusing, only bringing attention to the fact that this happens.
