Dairy farming: Increase in productivity discussed
Simply asking farmers to untie their animals and give them full access to water has improved milk production
LAHORE:
Improved extension services can significantly increase the productivity and profitability of smallholder dairy farmers in Pakistan, said speakers at the Agriculture Sector Linkages Programme (ASLP), a dairy project forum on Wednesday. The ASLP dairy project is being run in the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore since 2007, as a collaborative initiative between the Pakistani and Australian governments. Speaking on the occasion, UVAS Vice-Chancellor Dr Talat Naseer Pasha said the ASLP extension programme had reaped wonderful results and helped increase production of smallholder dairy farmers. ASLP Project Leaders Prof Peter Wynn, Dr David McGill and Dr Hassan Mahmood Warraich explained the impact of improved extension services on the productivity of smallholder farmers. “Simply asking farmers to untie their animals and give them full access to water has improved milk production on some farms by 25%,”remarked Dr Warraich.
