Settlement: Death sentence suspended

LAHORE: A Lahore High Court division bench on Monday suspended death warrants of a convict scheduled to be hanged on Tuesday (today) after his brother appeared in the court and submitted documentary evidence of a pardon extended to him by legal heirs of the deceased. Justice Mahmood Maqbool Bajwa passed the suspension order and directed the counsel for convict Niaz Ahmed’s brother to submit in court certified copies of the documents in two weeks. Earlier, the counsel told the court that the documents were also submitted to the trial court but it refused to acknowledge them. Ahmed had been sentenced to death by a court in Mandi Bahaudin for killing one Mazhar Iqbal. His appeal was dismissed by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
