ATLANTA: Jordan Spieth believes the mental toughness he has acquired over a rollercoaster season of remarkable highs and occasional lows can help him stay near the top of the golfing world for the next 20 years.

The 22-year-old Texan capped a superb year on Sunday by clinching victory in the season-ending Tour Championships at East Lake in Atlanta, a win that saw him pocket the $10 million bonus on offer to the winner of the FedEx Cup.

The victory took Spieth’s earnings for 2015 to an incredible $22 million — $1 million for every year he has been on the planet — and saw him return to the top of the world rankings as number one.

Spieth, who won the Masters and the US Open this season and finished tied for fourth at the British Open and runner-up at the PGA Championship, said his ability to return to form after disappointing displays was one of the main takeaways of the year.

“It’s the greatest season I’ve ever had, obviously,” he said. “But it’s one where I believe we took our game on course and off course to a level that I didn’t think would be possible at different times in my life.”

The emergence of a cluster of young talent led by Spieth, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and Australia’s Jason Day, with America’s Rickie Fowler just behind, also excites the new world number one.

“I think it’s in as great a state as it’s been in a while,” said Spieth when asked about the current golfing circuit. “I think that people just seem more excited, you can see and it just seems to be having a bit more of an impact in this year than maybe the last couple years.”
