UNITED NATIONS, UNITED STATES: French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Saturday he will attend a ceremony next week to raise the Palestinian flag at the United Nations, despite opposition from Israel and the United States.

The Palestinians have invited hundreds of leaders to attend the event on Wednesday in the presence of president Mahmud Abbas.

Fabius told reporters in New York that his presence at the ceremony would highlight France's "continued support for a two-state solution."
"We cannot allow the two-state solution to fall apart before our eyes," he said.

"We cannot risk seeing Daesh take over the Palestinian cause," he said, referring to the Islamic State group that now controls parts of Syria and Iraq.

France was among the 119 countries that backed a UN resolution allowing the flags of Palestine and of the Holy See to be raised at the world body, alongside those of the 193 member-states.

Eight countries including Israel, the United States, Canada and Australia voted against the measure, dismissing it as a symbolic gesture that would not serve the cause of peace.

Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour has said the hoisting of the flag will be a "glorious day" that will underscore Palestinian aspirations for statehood.

The Palestinians and the Holy See have non-member observer status at the United Nations.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is planning to attend the flag-raising event held just after Abbas takes the podium at the General Assembly to deliver his address.

On that same day, Ban will be hosting a meeting of the diplomatic quarter seeking a political settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In a shift, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the Arab League have been invited to the meeting along with the foreign ministers of Russia, the United States and EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini.

Hashmi | 8 years ago | Reply Coming after giving the Palestine State an ‘Observer State’ status at the United Nations, hoisting of Palestinian flag at the UN, even if only symbolic in nature, is another positive step in the right direction, taking it closer to the full member status. And it is nice to hear that, along with hundreds of other leaders, French Foreign Minister will be present at the Palestinian flag hoisting ceremony, to demonstrate support for Palestinians. As was to be expected, eight countries including United States, Canada and Australia voted against the measure, dismissing it as a symbolic gesture that would not serve the cause of peace. With the US, Canada and Australia also having been founded on the graves of the indigenous population, they naturally feel an affinity for Israel which was created, and got expanded in much the same way. As for their stance that this gesture will not serve the cause of peace, what is it that they think will serve the cause of peace? Various rounds of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians have been held under US auspices for around two decades but they all flopped because Israel is not willing to give Palestinians even a small, contiguous piece of land, out of the territory that wholly belongs to them and where they have lived for generations. Before the last round of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations when Palestinians wanted at least a temporary freeze on the illegal Israeli settlement-building activity for the duration of talks Barack Obama spoke forcefully saying “Freeze means freeze,” but when Israelis, despite taking all aid and other favours from the US, refused to oblige, this was Obama who, instead of exerting some pressure on Israelis, tamely downgraded his statement to say “Demand for freeze (on settlements) is not a suitable premise to build peace process on. Perhaps for these three countries, the only positive move by Palestinians would be to vacate Palestine altogether and seek refugee status elsewhere, on top of millions of Palestinians who have already been forced by Israelis through massacres and other means to leave their land. I hope the Europeans who have taken over from the dishonest broker United States, will work speedily towards a two-state solution before Israel takes over all Palestinian land through the barrier wall and by placing its settlements in such a manner which leaves no contiguous piece of land for Palestinians to form their state on.
