According to Ajoka Theatre’s official, who wished to remain anonymous, Gohar was already suffering from gastrointestinal cancer, but her condition worsened at the end of her stay in New Delhi. After consulting the local doctors, she was immediately hospitalised.
Her spouse Shahid Nadeem, who is also a part of Ajoka Theatre, was accompanying her on the trip and chose to stay back with her.
The official further added that Gohar was busy presenting theatre plays in Lahore, and simultaneously working for a performance in New Delhi for the past two months. Bullha, Dara, Kon Hai Yeh Gustakh and Lo Phir Basant Aye were the plays that Gohar’s team performed in India. “All the four plays were appreciated by the Indian audience,” said the official. In view of her team members, Gohar was in good health when she embarked on her journey to India and was thoroughly involved in all the plays.
Another official of Ajoka Theatre mentioned that Indian doctors are treating Gohar, while the rest of the team has returned to Lahore. The team remains hopeful of Gohar’s speedy recovery and her successful return to the country.
According to Ajoka’s website, their team was in New Delhi to perform at a four-day theatre festival, which was also organised by the troupe, making it the first-ever Pakistani theatre festival to be held in India.
