It has only been nine months since the last episode of Sons of Anarchy was aired on television, but it seems that the show’s creator Kurt Sutter has already started developing its potential spin-off. He recently dropped several hints about the follow-up to the crime-drama series, reported Entertainment Weekly.

During a promotional activity for his upcoming show The Bastard Executioner, Sutter divulged details about the project, which was reported to have been in the works a month ago. The series will focus on the Mayans motorcycle club, and won’t serve as a prequel but as a contemporary story involving another motorcycle gang. It may include characters from the original show.

“It’s the same [biker] subculture, but it’d be interesting to see the influences of [Hispanic] culture and how they impact the subculture we already understand,” Sutter said. He explained how he would place the storyline so far from Northern California that it wouldn’t step on the mythology that’s already been told. That being said, it could still include some “cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters.” He added, “I wouldn’t want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that … My intent is that over the hiatus, I’ll initiate a script for the pilot and take it from there.”

Although Sutter currently has his hands full with a soon-to-be aired show and a Sons of Anarchy spin-off, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a prequel to the series. A prequel has been reportedly planned as a limited series and would be based on Jax’s father, John Teller, and young Piney (William Lucking). It will show how Teller meets a younger Piney during the Vietnam War, their subsequent return home, and the eventual formation of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original (Samcro).

With fans already brimming with excitement at the possibility of a prequel, Sutter had said during an interview in February that he was unlikely to start working on the show, expected to be titled First 9, anytime soon. “Didn’t want to come right off of that [Sons of Anarchy] and do a prequel or anything like that. I wanted to give it a couple years to breathe before we came back to do it,” he said, reported E! Online. “So, none of that has gone away. We’ll see how the next couple of years or, at least, the next year with [The Bastard Executioner] unfolds, and then we’ll have to see.”
