Surprisingly, it was a fan who tweeted the right pronunciation of Voldemort's name:

and JK Rowling promptly replied in agreement:
... but I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who pronounces it that way. https://t.co/HxhJ5XY5HP

and Twitter went into a tizzy, because their childhood has now taken a different shape altogether:

An ongoing debate ensued about the origin of his name:
@mhenrylucero @Universe_Box @jk_rowling I was thinking that Voldemort was death thief in french .. ?

@mhenrylucero @Universe_Box @jk_rowling yes, isn't it French? Meaning "flight of death" or "flying death" or something?
— Katie S (@ktj_starkid_ptx) September 9, 2015
@ariellelopesc @mhenrylucero @Universe_Box @jk_rowling It would have been Voleur de mort. But vol also means flight. I guess it is the idea

@instntinsolence @ktj_starkid_ptx @mhenrylucero @jk_rowling the two translations are corrects because they are homonyms in french actually:)

One even questioned names of the other characters in the popular series:

Some had fun when they came upon this new revelation:

@mhenrylucero @Universe_Box @jk_rowling don't tell spielberg or he'll want to release an entire new set of movies: "the voldemor(t)" cut

@mhenrylucero @Universe_Box @jk_rowling and here I thought it was pronounced Trump.

The main antagonist in the book has had the misfortune of his name being globally (with the exception of France) mispronounced. His name originates from French word Vol de mort which means "theft of death/death theft".
The Dark Lord rightly puts all us muggles to shame:
