MINGORA: Members of Khwendo Jirga took to the streets of Swat on Thursday over excessive interference in the overall functioning of the organisation.

A large number of activists gathered outside Swat Press Club. They urged Chief Minister Pervez Khattak to declare the women-only jirga as an “established forum” to address the challenges faced by women.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, KJ Chairperson Tabassum Adnan said there are some organisations that are trying to impede the jirga’s efforts to prioritise the problems faced by women.

“Some people have repeatedly threatened me and are inhibiting the jirga’s activities,” she said. “A group of people who were once part of KJ are using its name to carry out illegal projects. Such activities are ruining the reputation of the organisation.”

According to Adnan, the jirga has also been accused of carrying out illegal activities.

“We have been accused of obtaining funds from foreign agencies,” she said “These rumours are entirely false and the jirga has no ulterior motives.”

Adnan said firm action will be taken against anyone who tries to use the forum to pursue their vested interests.
