A glimpse into the world of Pakistani powerhouses

September 14, 2015
At Mocca, waiting for my coffee.

I fell in love with jewellery designing during a competition held in our college. Even though I was unable to participate in it I ended up making sketches and immediately fell in love with this form of art.

What inspires you?

My inspiration comes from the reward I receive. You get to see your ideas, imaginations and stories flow from your heart to an actual fabricated piece on the bench. Then onto a woman who wears it to tell the world her story of joy, confidence or love. That is my achievement and it is wonderful!

How has the jewellery designing industry changed in Pakistan over the years?

It has changed drastically, as earlier, women were restricted to traditional jewellery and had limited choice. Now there are more options and women themselves are also open to opt for new collections. They want to wear trendy, modern, yet traditional jewellery and that is what my brand is doing — inspiring Pakistani women to look different in their own norms.

What’s  the hardest part about working in this industry?

Keeping your original designs and ideas from getting copied! It is really quite frustrating at times to see your designs getting nicked. Also, it can be challenging to get the workers to understand and opt for different or new techniques.

Do you think there is much scope for jewellery designing in Pakistan?

Yes of course,  you can see that from my brand as it is not only recognised in Pakistan but it’s been loved everywhere. I have customers from different countries and that’s what the jewellery designing industry in Pakistan has also achieved. More people are now opting for this profession.

How would you encourage women to become successful entrepreneurs?

Being an entrepreneur is all about empowering yourself to create a business that’s right for you. It’s about facing and rising to different challenges. Therefore I would advise women to not just jump into the market and start a business. They should first gain knowledge and then plan accordingly.

Any advice for young women aspiring to become designers?

Believe in your dreams! Don’t give up, work hard and more importantly, be original.
