I have always been wary of pretentious lists by important authors who recommend ‘essential’ reading. Such lists assume everyone reads for the same reason.

It is for this reason that I find it difficult to recommend fiction. However, non-fiction and ‘self-help’ books can enhance our understanding of the grey areas in life. I want to share seven books that have done this for me.

Shazaf Fatima Haider is a writer and a teacher of English. Her first book, How It Happened, was published by Penguin Books India
