KARACHI: A resident of Gulistan-e-Jauhar has taken the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) to court for Rs200 million over disconnecting his power supply on charges of theft.

Syed Mehmood Akhtar Naqvi maintained that despite a restraining order from the Sindh High Court (SHC) in a constitutional petition, KESC officials disconnected the supply to his flat in Block 19. He said that they removed the meter on the pretext of checking it and also forcibly obtained a cheque of Rs50,000 from him.

He maintained that the manner in which KESC disconnected them, harrassed the women and children, forced them to issue a cheque and threatened them with arrest was all in contempt of court. It had put him and his family through mental torture and agony and has damaged his position in the community of the residential complex. He is suing KESC for damages worth Rs200 million.

The plaintiff is also filing a separate application for contempt of court. Justice Maqbool Baqar heard the initial arguments by the plaintiff and ordered notices to be issued to the defendants for January 14, 2011. The notices will be issued to KESC Chief Operating Officer Tabish Gohar, director Amir Zia, general manager Akbar Baloch, deputy GM Quddoos, Gulistan-e-Jauhar zone billing manager Iftikhar and assistant engineer Iftikhar Ahmed for January 14.
