Death by silicosis: Devise labour health security plan: SC

ISLAMABAD: The apex court has directed the federal and provincial ombudsman offices and information commissioners to formulate, notify and enforce transparency standards in an effort to facilitate the enforcement of labour and related rights protection. Chief Justice Jawwad S Khawaja, while hearing a suo motu case regarding the death of labourers from silicosis, has called for immediate action. For those working in stone crushing units, the chief justice has directed provincial secretaries to formulate a health security plan and compile comprehensive data on their health conditions. He directed the chief secretaries and chief commissioner of Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) to ensure that the directives were timely and effectively complied with, by concerned departments and agencies.
