PESHAWAR: Awami National Party Central General Secretary Mian Iftikhar Hussain has said re-polls in various polling stations will not provide an effective solution to rigging and mismanagement.

This was mentioned in a press release issued on Monday. According to the document, Mian Iftikhar – who is also the leader of the tripartite alliance of opposition parties in the K-P Assembly – was speaking to journalists at the residence of Pakistan Peoples Party leader Najamuddin Khan. The conference was held shortly after a meeting of the alliance members.

According to the ANP leader, plans to take to the streets against the outcome of the local government polls held on May 30 remain on the cards.

“Initially, we did not want to take action as we were preparing for the re-polls scheduled for July 30,” the statement quoted Mian Iftikhar as saying.

He even blamed Chief Minister Pervez Khattak for the election violence on May 30. “Mian Iftikhar said action must be taken against those who are responsible for rigging the electoral process,” read the statement. About the tenure of office bearers of the alliance, Mian Iftikhar said they should be elected for six months instead of being given the office for only a month.
