ISLAMABAD:

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Friday handed down three-day physical remand to over 50 slum-dwellers and protesters arrested during Thursday’s operation against an illegal settlement in Sector I-11.

They were arrested for resisting and clashing with the police during the operation.

Sabzi Mandi police arrested the suspects before an ATC and requested the court for five-day physical remand. The court, however, awarded remand for three days.

Cases were registered under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 after the protesters pelted the police and CDA and ICT teams with stones during the operation.

Sabzi Mandi SHO Mehboob Ahmed said they had freed women and children and had obtained remand for the men only.

He said no arrest was made on Friday, the second day of the operation, as slum-dwellers did not resist.

Islamabad Chief Commissioner Zulfiqar Haider and Inspector General of Police Tahir Alam Khan also visited the site on Friday.
