ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Army on Wednesday said it had shot down an alleged Indian ‘spy drone’ after it intruded Pakistani territory near Bhimber along the Line of Control.

“The spy drone is used for aerial photography,” said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a brief statement.

The incident comes just days after ice breaking meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in Russia.

In a joint statement issued after the talks, the two countries decided to arrange meetings of senior military officials to lower tensions along the LoC, a de facto border that divides Jammu and Kashmir.

It is not clear whether the latest incident will have any impact on the proposed interaction between the two militaries.

However, the picture of the downed drone provided by ISPR showed that it was of a commercial, variety. Industry experts said the small, unarmed model was openly sold for aerial filming and would contain no secret military technology.

A photo supplied by the Pakistani military appeared to show a Chinese-made DJI Phantom 3, said Huw Williams, the Unmanned Systems Editor at IHS Jane’s International Defence Review.

“Due to its limited operating range – about two km – if the Indian military is using the system it would most likely be for close reconnaissance or security work,” Williams said.

Later, The Hindustan Times reported that a spokesperson for the Indian military said that: “No drone or UAV crash of the Indian Army has taken place.”

Indian high commissioner summoned

The Indian high commissioner in Islamabad was summoned to the Foreign Office on Thursday.

Foreign office spokesperson Qazi Khalilluah confirmed on Wednesday evening that the Indian diplomat had been summoned and that the issue of the ‘Indian spy drone’ and violation of Pakistan airspace would be raised.

Funny, we are catching actual spies and India is busy with pigeons, planets, boats, and camels as suspects. Good going. Drone seems like a cheap one and wouldn’t hurt them as a devastating loss but the message is very devastating. This is blatant act of racism. Since last 10 yr Pakistan has allowed thousands of drone attack on its territory by USA so much so that national bird of Pakistan is called DRONE. Curious how the army ‘shot down’ the drone and it’s remote control box as well! Perhaps the Injuns dropped it and ran when playtime was over. It looks too staged and just a broken plastic toy placed among twigs to give the appearance of being shot. The least the army could have done was to have used bullets! But then they would possibly leave the casings lying around to compound the error. And aren’t these the sort of Chinese hardware being offered to Pak armed forces now btw? Get a life guys! Indian military never use this kind of drones, they uses sophisticated drone which is capable of flying at 30,000ft-40,000 ft which pakistan lacks the credible air defence missile to bring it down. This is a toy available at amazon and ebay.If a drone is flyin in 30,000ft-40,000 ft it needs missile to get shot down which will make the drone disintegrate in 100’s of pieces and if it was flyin at tree top level then it needs guns to shot it down in that case also it would have disintegrated and scattered into pieces with bullet marks on it,remember the bullet is as long as human palm. But this drown neither shot down by missile nor bullets as no evidence or marks in drone suggests.Recommend

  • Vectra
    Jul 16, 2015 - 10:48AM

If the drone is neither shot down with bullets or missiles then assuming that its engine failed and it crashed then in such a situation also the drone would have disintegrated in a crashed situation. So this possibility is also ruled out as the drone is intact as it is with no damage.Recommend
