KARACHI: Imran Abbas loyalists have reason to rejoice as the trailer of his second shot at Bollywood, Jaanisaar, released on Wednesday, according to a press release. The film, which has been directed by Muzaffar Ali and jointly-produced by Meera Ali and Kotwara Studios, marks the acting debut of fashion entrepreneur Pernia Qureshi.

Muzaffar, who has classics, such as Umrao Jaan to his credit, has retaken the director’s seat for the film after an almost two-decade-long hiatus. “People have been asking me why I’ve not been making films. But the fact is that I only wanted to direct a movie that would touch my soul and also showcase my creativity. Jaanisaar is that film,” he said.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Imran shared it was an honour for him to work with the legendary filmmaker. “I had a great time working on Jaanisaar because the director [Muzaffar] has deep understanding of the creative arts,” he said. “From music to poetry to script to wardrobe to design, he holds a sound perspective on all these aspects. Everything has been perfectly done and the audiences will definitely see that in the movie,” he added.

Muzaffar will also make a brief appearance in the film as a freedom fighter and mentor to the protagonists. The soundtrack of Jaanisaar features songs by a string of Bollywood and Pakistani singers, including Shreya Ghoshal, Sukhwinder Singh, Shafqat Amanat Ali and Abida Parveen.

Jaanisaar is a period-drama set during the pre-independence era, 20 years after the events of 1857. It’s a love story of a courtesan, deeply rooted in the ethos of Indian culture and ideals of freedom, and an Indian prince, who has recently returned from England. The film is slated for an August 21 release.
