ISLAMABAD:

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking stay of local government (LG) polls in federal capital scheduled for July 27.

The petition has been filed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Zafar Ali Shah, who has made the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the interior ministry and the law ministry as respondents.

The petitioner has contended that the ECP has issued schedule for the polls without any legality as parliament has not approved a bill pertaining to local government in Islamabad.

The petitioner argued that LG polls were held in Balochistan, Khyber-Kakhtunkhwa and cantonment boards on a party basis which was not correct.  The apex court should stay holding of LG polls in Islamabad until the parliament passes the legislation, he said.

The petitioner said that the polls in Islamabad should be conducted along with LG elections in Punjab and Sindh in September.

The petitioner contended that if a legal issue arose after the polls were held, who will protect it and the matter needed explanation.

Salman - SK | 9 years ago | Reply Pakistan's misfortune is that these champions of democracy, whether they are PMLN or PPP, do their utmost to avoid giving power to the people on the local level. And, the public seems to be ignorant of the fact that if Local Governments are elected they need funds to operate projects locally, and the Central and Provincial governments do not want to spare even the minutest amounts from their loot and plunder. Democracy in Pakistan is at best tenuous and can only flourish if the power is devolved up to the village level. And, please do not raise the question of education. The villagers have better sense to govern their affairs than these fake degree holders.
