Pakistani analyst and commentator Zaid Hamid has been sentenced for eight years in jail and 1,000 lashes by a Saudi court for criticising the Saudi government, according to local media reports. However, the news has not been corroborated by the Pakistani Embassy in Riyadh or the Foreign Office.

Earlier, Hamid was arrested during a private visit to the Kingdom with his wife. He was apparently taken into custody after making statements against the Saudi government.

On June 26, the Foreign Office confirmed Hamid had been arrested in Saudi Arabia.

“Our embassy in Riyadh has informed us that Mr Zaid Hamid was arrested about two weeks ago. Since then, the embassy has been working with the local authorities to get consular access,” Foreign Office spokesperson Qazi Khalilullah had told a news briefing in Islamabad.

“Due to the efforts of the embassy, his wife was able to talk to him. Again, due to the efforts of the embassy, his wife will be able to meet with him on 30 June,” he said without giving further details.

In 2013, a former aide who left Hamid’s organisation accused him of being on the payrolls of the Inter-Services Intelligence agency to wage psychological operations against those opposed to the Pakistani security establishment.

One can clearly deduce the intellectual level of Pakistan security establishment. Whoever it has bet on to do its dirty job of destabilizing Pakistan and its nascent democracy has turned out to be a complete loser! It thought that the assorted cast of characters such as this lal topi wala imbecile, Rent-a-Mullah Qadri and the gasbag Niazi were all stallions but they turned out to be nothing but mules and damp squids.

Does Lal Topi wala’s allies in the security establishment and electronic media have the guts now to raise even so much as a whimper against Saudi Arabia?Recommend

I charge the Saudi state with exporting terrorist ideology across the muslim world.

If anyone is wondering why all this terrorism is happening in the middle east, and 9/11 and all of what happened after, thank one family. The family of Al-Saud.

Why send him to jail for freedom of speech, why not just deport him to Pakistan.

I would be less worried about ZH, and more worried about a large segment of radicalized Saudis.

Saudi went into Yemen, blunder, sentencing of ZH to 8 yrs in Jail another blunder.

Get your priorities straight Saudi. Daesh is already amongst you and you’re busy sentencing the likes of ZHRecommend

Always blabbering and ranting against India and bolstered by thumping up by Pakistan people and establishment emboldened this lal topi to overstep his limits with regards to Saudi Arabia In 2013 he visited India and made hate speeches but got away scot free because tolerant Hindus did not take it as an offence as he was the guest of the country. Now I am sure he will get a lesson for his life from his coreligionist Saudis. I thought ZH was a staunch pro-Jihadi. I wonder what he had to say about the pro-Jihadi Saudi government that they didn’t like. Did he say they are not pro-Jihadi enough? Whatever he said, his arrest is a flagrant and abhorrent violation of rights to free speech. The punishment, if true, is grossly disproportionate in the least. But then we are talking about KSA.

Many so called Liberals are infact fake and nothing else. When it serves their purpose then rules are good. Otherwise rules are not good at all. When it comes to Zaid Hamid’s arrest then many liberals are appreciating but they are forgetting the fact that he is arrested for his difference of opinion with the Saudi government. Kindly discourage such behavior and we should condemn such act of Saudia at all levels. Recommend

Just doesn’t make sense, what did he do to get such a harsh sentence? I’m not one to argue about his stature as a commentator, as he may have a controversial reputation in Pakistan, but for all I know he’s a citizen of my country and this random imprisonment doesn’t make sense to me. Zaid Hamid got a a befitting punishment for all the conspiracy theories and hatred that he’d been preaching about. In any case, it is sad that Pakistan has this unfortunate situation in which just about anybody and everybody who does not have a job becomes a security analyst. Zaid Hamid is one such character, whose reality is nothing more than that of a common thug who wears a garb of security analyst. He only gains popularity by preaching his “Pakistan in a state of war” theories rather than educating people about “Pakistan in a state of manufacturing Terrorists” theories. While Pakistan itself has no self respect left, Saudi Arabia does. It is because of this that they decided to not tolerate his nonsense and went ahead and punished him for his stupid comments against Arabs.Recommend

ZH arrest and lashing came as a surprise to me , however his stupidity did not come to me as a surprise . When you are in foreign land you do do things as you do in Pakistan . All aha does not give common sense in charity , and then this guy was no where near that . Recommend

All Pakistanis need to understand this…… Imprisonment and lashes to a Pakistani in a foreign country means international disgrace to Pakistan. Would they have imprisoned an Iranian, an Indian of an American? I think not! I am amazed that some Pakistanis are sounding jovial about thus news. I personally think ZH is a nut case, but I will stand by his right of free speech. Have some self respect people, and put pressure on your calloused government to extradite a fellow Pakistani. 1000 lashes is death sentence.Recommend

Lashes provide he does not cry in pain , if he cries in pain his number of lashes will get multiplied by 100 for every cry but if he laughs and says ” may glory Of narender Modi , may glory of Hindustan , may glory of the King of Saudi Arabia then his sentence will be abetted by one day for his every glorification n proclamation ☝️Recommend

Saudi army never had the strength to fight its own wars. If we don’t wish to fight your wars for you anymore, then stop crying and pick a gun and do your work yourself. If talking against a government is a crime then arrest Dubai’s berucracy for talking against Pakistan.

One can easily understand the mind level of Saudia, they can’t be a man by themselves and ask for others help and when they deny it, they start threatening others.
Stop hiding under America’s shadow and be a man Recommend

his speeches having the most truth, he has been defined the enemies of Islam and Pakistan, he predicated the role of Pakistan for the success of Islam. zh tries to trained the pakistani youth according to ideology of pakistan and this s not spreading of hatred.
if following the ideology of pakistan is hatred then i ask everyone of you that why did we got pakistan, what are the obejectives of creating pakistan.
we should not ignore the role of pakistan for islam and that is what zh teaches and convey in his speeches.

his arrest and sentenced in S.A is great tragedy for every pakistani.

i heartedly share my grief with his family and every pakistani who are waiting to hear his speach.
