‘Jurassic World’ lights up cinemas in Ramazan

Reboot of the 90s classic rakes in Rs81 million while entering its third week at the local box office

KARACHI: Looking at the box office returns of Jurassic World worldwide, it should come as no surprise that the dinosaur-flick has practically stomped its competitors and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. The movie, which is the fourth instalment in the immensely popular Jurassic Park franchise, has managed to rake in approximately Rs81 million in the middle of its third week.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Mirza Saad Baig, general manager of Footprint (Pvt) Ltd, the company responsible for the film’s local distribution, revealed that the box office has greatly benefited from the movie for a number of reasons. “It’s an action film that all kinds of audience can enjoy,” he said.

Although the domestic box office figures of the reboot of the 90s classic aren’t any closer to another blockbuster – Fast & Furious 7, it’s still commendable for its whopping earnings despite being released a few days before Ramazan.

During its week-long run before the start of the holy month, Jurassic World made a little above Rs60 million. But the CGI-heavy film is continuing to perform well in theatres, with earnings gaining momentum, adding up approximately Rs20 million during this period.

Initially released on a total of 42 screens, the number was brought down to 37 soon after the beginning of the holy month. The movie has generated most of its revenue from the cinemas in Karachi and Lahore.

“In Karachi it has performed the best in Nueplex cinemas whereas in Lahore it has done exceedingly well in IMAX cinemas. So, you can say that it’s an even split,” said Baig. He mentioned that prior to Ramazan, the film had done reasonably well in single-screen cinemas as well and despite the impressive run, Baig felt it was highly unlikely that the film would cross the Rs100 million-barrier in Pakistan.

Jurassic World recently topped the US box office for a third week running by keeping its competition, Inside Out and Ted 2, at bay. The movie which earned an estimated $54.2 million at the US box office also became the first film to gross $500 million in North America this year, reported The Guardian.

The movie which is set 22 years after the events of the first film is about another dinosaur amusement-theme park on the same island of Isla Nublar. Chaos ensues when a genetically-modified dinosaur, Indominus Rex, manages to break loose and runs amok across the island. Jurassic World has been directed by Colin Trevorrow and stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and Irrfan Khan in lead roles.
