New appointment: Roshan Ali Shaikh takes KMC’s reins

He is also the managing director of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board

After the mysterious disappearance of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) administrator Saqib Somro, Roshan Ali Shaikh has been appointed as his predecessor.

In the wee hours of June 26, the chief secretary issued a notification in which he gave over the charge of the KMC to Shaikh, the managing director of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, who will retain this title as well.

The notification was, however, not implemented immediately as Shaikh was not allowed to take over the charge. He told The Express Tribune that there were some technical issues and the notification was suspended for the time being. "I took the charge later in the evening and chaired a few meetings at Bilawal House as KMC administrator," he said. Meanwhile, a local government (LG) official claimed that LG minister Sharjeel Memon had issues with Shaikh taking charge.

Shaikh pledged to rid KMC of corruption. On the FIA's revelations of the embezzlement in KMC's education department, he said that he will cooperate with the law enforcement agencies and will make sure that no culprit is favoured. On the disappearance of his predecessor, he said Soomro was suffering from cancer and left Germany for treatment.
