SWABI:

Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology celebrated the 19th convocation on Tuesday with Governor Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan as the chief guest. Degrees were conferred on 225 BS and 29 MS graduates and two PhD scholars.

While addressing students and guests, the governor said methods of work in Pakistan need to evolve so the country could develop rapidly.

Taxing IT sector

Talking about the World Trade Organization regime known as Information Technology Agreement (which asks for the elimination of tariffs on all IT-related products), the governor said the regime poses great challenges to developing countries like Pakistan. Pakistan is not a signatory to the agreement, making it one of the five countries that pay the highest import taxes on IT products.

During his speech, the governor also paid homage to late Ghulam Ishaq Khan, former president of Pakistan and founder of the institute. “He was a true visionary who conceived the idea of this centre of excellence,” he said.

The governor also announced Rs2 million for the horticulture department of the institute.

Appreciating the role of its alumni, GIK Rector Jehangir Bashir said previous students are institute’s foremost ambassadors after the provincial government, Fata administration, National ICT Programme and the Higher Education Commission.

“We strive to produce graduates who can make substantial contributions to society,” said the rector. “We encourage students to think and discover innovative solutions to complex problems, and not just respond to trends but  shape them as well.”
