FAISALABAD:

A woman committed suicide on Friday, reportedly after Faisalabad Electricity Supply Company (FESCO) removed the electricity meter and sent her an inflated bill.

Ansar Ali, a relative of the deceased, told The Express Tribune that a FESCO team from Nazimabad had removed the meter Myra’s* house in Ayub Colony and sent her a bill for Rs60,000. He said Myra, a widow, had visited the subdivision office and complained about the bill. He said the SDO had told her to pay the bill in instalments but asked for Rs30,000 to restore power supply.  He said she had told him that she did not have Rs30,000 but the SDO had said the payment was non-negotiable.

Ali said Myra had swallowed poison after she returned home. He said she was taken to a hospital where she died.

The Factory Area SHO said police had taken custody of the body and started investigation.

A FESCO spokesman said a team had checked power pilferage and detected power theft from a meter. He said the team had removed the meter. “The SDO sent a detection bill for 1,948 units from January to June.” He said the SDO had issued notices to the consumer and moved an application with Factory Area police to register a case on power theft.
