PESHAWAR:

Qaumi Watan Party Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chief Sikandar Hayat Sherpao said his party’s performance in local government polls exceeded his expectations.

Addressing a party meeting in Watan Kor on Friday, Sherpao said the increase in QWP’s vote bank speaks volumes about its growing popularity in the province.

Flanked by the party’s zonal chairman and other office-bearers, the QWP leader said the party had managed to perform quite well in various constituencies even though they faced stiff competition from the alliances of ruling and opposition parties.

“We will continue our struggle to safeguard the constitutional rights of Pukhtuns and stand firm against all those conspiring against them,” he said.

Sherpao condemned the arrest of QWP Peshawar chief Ibrar Khalil and party activists in Swat district. He demanded the government release detainees immediately and shun “tactics of political victimisation”.

The party’s zone-wise performance was reviewed during the meeting and issues of alleged rigging and irregularities were also discussed.
