With love from Pakistan: Sindhris now available in Chicago

Sindhri is often considered one of the sweetest varieties of mangoes in the world

Sindh’s signature fruit Sindhri mangoes have made its way to the US city of Chicago, in addition to number of locations around the world.

On Wednesday, the US Consulate General in Karachi posted a picture on its Facebook page, showing Sindhri mangoes neatly displayed in a Chicago shop.

The fruit, which is often dubbed as “King of Fruits” by its lovers due to its sheer sweetness, is available at a price of $24.99 per box.

Sindhri, as evident from its name is grown in Sindh, and is often considered one of the sweetest varieties of mangoes in the world.

Pakistan grows hundreds of varieties of mangoes and exports many of them. This year the country aims to generate at least $60 million in revenue from the export of mangoes, as it wishes to reach 100,000-ton export mark.

This year, farmers are eyeing production of near 1.8 million metric tonnes of mangoes, despite huge losses due to climatic hazards in upper Punjab. The climatic changes in rain patterns, thunderstorms and a prolonged winter season have adversely affected crop production in Punjab and may cause a 30 to 35% decline in mango production in the province against its share of 64% in the country.

Mango production in Rahim Yar Khan, Muzaffargarh and Multan is expected to face reduction by 25%, 50% and 60%, respectively this year.

However, the crop in Sindh is comparatively safe where only a 10% reduction is expected in its share of 35% of the country’s total mango production.

Mangoes spread to other centers of the world

In addition to Chicago, Pakistani mangoes have also reached Canada and Singapore.
