Locomotives: Railways spends Rs11b on repair

On Tuesday, the procurement of 58 locomotives was approved and the contract was awarded to a Chinese company

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Railways is managing the rehabilitation and repair of 177 locomotives through the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) at a cost of Rs11.289 billion. The repair of inactive locomotives would improve the reliability and performance of the company. On Tuesday, the procurement of 58 locomotives was approved and the contract was awarded to a Chinese company. All 58 locomotives have reached the country. Furthermore, a tender for the procurement of 55 locomotives (4,000-4,500 horsepower) out of 75 locomotives is at an advanced stage and will be decided in the near future. With regard to a pilot project for the manufacturing of five 3,000 HP diesel-engine locomotives, the railways said a contract agreement had been signed and a letter of credit had been established. So far, five locomotives have been manufactured and the project is expected to be completed soon.
