CHARSADDA:

The All Pakistan Government Employees Coordination Council in Charsadda on Thursday expressed solidarity with their peers in Islamabad who were manhandled, baton-charged and tear gassed by the federal capital’s police on June 3.

The workers were seeking a raise in their salaries and marching towards the Red Zone in the federal capital when the police resorted to baton charging to halt their progress.

On Thursday, employees and officials from various departments and institutions boycotted their routine duties, hampering the smooth running of business in all government bodies of Charsadda district.

The employees arrived at the Farooq Azam Chowk in Charsadda in a procession to raise their voice.

Amidst slogans against the federal government, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, the protesters were addressed by Charsadda Coordination Council President Haji Hidayatullah, Wapda Hydroelectric Union President Ikramullah, Haji Marjan Ali and Peer Iqbal.

The speakers expressed concern over the baton-charging and firing of tear gas shells, saying it was unjustified to attack peaceful government employees in such a manner.

They added the government made repeated promises over the last two years of reasonable increases in salaries but has not acted upon them.
