Death penalty: Four murder convicts executed in the Punjab

Two sentenced to death

FAISALABAD/ LAHORE: Four murder convicts were hanged in prisons at Mianwali, Attock, Sahiwal and Sargodha on Tuesday.

Muhammad Khan was executed at Sargodha District Jail. He was convicted of killing a woman and child in 2002 during a robbery in Karachi.  Khizer Hayat was hanged at the Mianwali Central Jail. He was convicted of killing a man in 1998. Muhammad Sarwar was hanged in Sahiwal Central Jail for murdering a rival. Chan Zaib was executed at Attock District Jail for murdering two brothers in 1995. They were executed amid tight security in and around jails. Their bodies were later handed over to their families for burial.

Sentenced to death

In Faisalabad, Additional Sessions Judge Chaudhry Muhammad Ilyas sentenced a murder convict to death on Tuesday.  The prosecution said Gul Nawaz and his accomplice Arshad had clubbed their rival Aslam to death in Chak 288-RB on June 1, 2011. The judge sentenced Nawaz to death and ordered him to pay Rs200,000 as compensation to the family of the deceased. Arshad was acquitted after being accorded benefit of doubt.

In Lahore, District and Sessions Judge Tariq Iftikhar Ahmed appointed Judicial Magistrate Irfan Ali to witness the execution of Shamsul Haq, a murder convict. The magistrate will record Haq’s last will at the Lahore Central Jail on June 4.
