ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday sought opinion of the government’s top lawyer on an application seeking suspension of the June 8 elections for the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly (GBLA). Muhammad Ali Akhtar, a former Pakistan People’s Party minister, has challenged the elections being held on the basis of the federal government’s 2009 statutory regulatory order (SROs). Akhtar through his counsel Ali Nawaz Kharal contended that the federal government was conducting elections under the impugned SROs which admittedly are in defiance of the fundamental rights of the people. He added that it was not only infringement of the rights of the people but was also not in compliance with the Supreme Court of Pakistan decision. Kharal said that the court had issued notices to the federation but no comments have been filed for the last two weeks. He prayed that SROs, subsequent orders and elections be suspended.
