LAHORE:

The government’s emphasis on power generation seems to be bearing fruit as the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) supplied an additional 28.472 million units of electricity to the national grid on May 31.  This was an increase from last year when the total amount clocked in at 104.17 units as compared to 132.642 million this year.

The additional contribution comes on the back of extra water released from dams by the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) on demand of provinces.

The primary purpose of dams is to store water that can be used for agriculture, whereas hydel electricity is a mere by-product of the process. Electricity generation from hydel power stations operated by Wapda depends upon water indents of Irsa.

Wapda delivers more than 30 billion units of low-cost electricity to the national grid per annum.
