China-Pakistan Economic Corridor 'unacceptable', Modi tells China

Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Sunday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi "very strongly" raised the issue regarding China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) during his recent visit to Beijing, and termed the project "unacceptable".

"Prime minster during his visit took up the issue very firmly and spoke very strongly that the CPEC going through PoK (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir) is unacceptable," Swaraj said at a press conference.

Further, Swaraj communicated Modi's concerns regarding the $46 billion project, and said that the Indian government had summoned a Chinese envoy to apprise over the corridor that is to run through Pakistani Kashmir.

The external affairs minister added that an Indian envoy in Beijing had also raised the same issue.

During Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Pakistan in April, the 3,000 kilometre-long CPEC was announced.

Kareemov | 9 years ago | Reply It is for all of you talking about IoK, Let me clear one thing, The corridor is to pass through Gilgit-Baltistan (the only access point to China) and Gilgit-Baltistan is not a part of Kashmir i.e. IoK or PoK. We have been struggling from the last six decades for proper citizenship according to the 1973 constitution BUT not being given, our suffering has a long lasting list and our sacrifices just ruined. We are the people always fighting at front lines in wars e.g Kargil and having maximum casualties/shahadat and still i am not a pakistani, Mohammad Karim represents Pakistan in Suchi Olympics, Samina Baig is called first Pakistani girl to conquer ME, Nazir Sabir called as Pakistani man to conquer Everest, Diana Baig plays for Pakistan women cricket, and so on... when it comes to constitutional and legal rights, we are being deprived. Gilgit-Baltistan should be made a major stakeholder in the CPEC!

Pakistan occupied the part called POK (Pakistan calls it Azad Kashmir) and resettled a lot of non-Kashmiris. It is now trying to legitimize the occupation by going ahead with the corridor.

Take your corridor out of a disputed territory and then everything is alright. For you people J n K is a disputed land, similarly, for us, PoK is a disputed land too. India's argument for pakistan kashmir is totally illogical when it disregards the fact that the ruler of junagadh signed junagadh to pakistan. Geographical contiguity was never a parameter set down by the British when they told the princely states to choose a side. And obviously as in kashmir, the people's wishes don't matter.

The only area remaining is the realignment due to Diamer-Basha dam inundating a portion of the highway. Now I am really surprised that both China and Pakistan started on the project way back without getting any permission from modi although he specifically asked for it and we should now expect a sad-face selfie going viral on the social media pretty soon ;).

Modi is keeping a watchful eye on what is happening behind him also, while looking forward. Now on this news: This is probably the first time that India has taken up something so bluntly with China. It will be interesting to watch what China will do. They want to take control of Pakistan's land area but would not want to offend India also. Offending India will bring India and USA closer as even USA do not want the land corridor and Gwawar to be given to China. This was the reason that Musharraf gave the management of Gwadar to Singapore and not China. China will also be careful in the current environment where freedom movement in Baluchistan is picking up. China will factor in the possibility or probability of Baluchistan separating and they would not like to create enemies there. So, I guess that China will continue on the power projects and shelve the road and port projects. In that case China will not be investing as much as it had promised as the power projects, though profitable will not give China control of Pakistan's territory. China would be weary that it may get a raw deal (use upper case letters for raw, if you think that way) in Baluchistan by making them enemies now. I guess that this is what Pakistan's Foreign Secretary will be discussing with US on his visit. He may name India, only because he would not have the courage to name USA. As for China, they should stand up with Pakistan and complete the CPEC at a fast pace to prove that they are worthy of the praises that Pakistan's army and government have been showering on them and also that they really meant what they said in their flowery words about their relations with Pakistan. It will make me happy too as I want to see much closer India-USA relationship. Closer relationship with USA brings along with it closer relationship with many other countries. China moving ahead on the CPEC will also build the public opinion in India in favor of much closer India-USA relationship. India can become a Japan by building close relationship with USA or can become a Pakistan by building close relationship with China.

It is again quoted here, and remember what China did in return, China high ups called Pakistan and told that 'India will sabotage the PCEC' so they need to be careful. This was reported about two weeks back. That's how strategic and strong Pakistan-China friendship is, Xi Jinping in his recent visit to Pakistan has called this 'Iron Friends'. China India relations are just transactional. The CPEC is proposed by China to Pakistan as China needed it to open the western region which is not as economically developed, along with the corridor to be used as an energy supply route. India should keep this in mind.

This is the first time that a Chinese President has received a Head of a State outside Beijing. Mr. Xi also mentioned this in his speech to the media. This clearly shows how important India & Mr.Modi is for them. Indian PM does not have any problem with CPEC, its just that a disputed land is being used for this corridor, so the objection. POK is a disputed territory. Even Balochistan should not be used in this corridor. That too is disputed land. India has every right to object, just like Pakistan objects to whatever is being done in J & K which clearly belongs to us.

BTW the Gilgit Baltistan part of the project is almost done with, with the reconstruction of KKH. All is needed is to connect the motorways, the Gwadar Karachi highway with these roads, the eastern alignment will be constructed later, but one corridor is already there.
