KOCHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the centuries-old Cheraman Juma Masjid, India’s oldest Muslim shrine, when he visits Kerala in July or August.

Cheraman Juma Masjid was constructed by a group of Arabs led by Malik Bin Dinar in the year 628 AD. Legend is that it is named after Chera King, Cheraman Perumal who embraced Islam when he visited Arabia. The mosque developed a syncretic reputation over the years where many non-Muslims held their ‘vidyarambham’ ceremonies.

The date of the PM’s visit has not yet been finalised, but Tourism Secretary G Kamala Vardhana Rao confirmed on Saturday that the primary reason for the PM’s visit is to initiate the end of the first phase of the Muziris heritage project by Kerala tourism.

“If Modi visits the mosque, it will be a welcome move because the BJP’s usual propaganda has it that Muslims in India are the progeny of ‘invaders’,” said Dr Fasal Gafoor, president of Muslim Educational Society.

The inauguration of the Muziris project will take place at the International Research and Convention Centre.”Officers from special branch visited the mosque and enquired about security aspects, like the number of gates and entrances to the mosque, as part of the PM’s visit to Kodungallur,” said Faisal Edavanakkad, the administrator of Cheraman Juma Masjid.

The PM might also pay a visit to historic St Thomas Church; allegedly founded by Christ’s apostle, and the ancient Kodungallur Bhagavathy temple.

    Great news that Prophet’s S.A.W. companion laid the foundation of the mosque in Kerala, a thousand years ago. Is it still fully functional daily Muslim mosque or a tourists attraction, I wonder?Recommend

    If he really cares for the Muslims of India then he should visit the site of the Babri Mosque his party goons had demolished 2 decades ago, and render his unconditional apology while announcing rebuilding the mosque. All the rest is just an eyewash and deception.Recommend

    Pakistanis should pay heed since the existence of this mosque indicates that islam existed here before Bin Qasim’s arrival.Recommend

    Incidentally, this is the first masjid built outside the ARAB world. The state of Kerala also boasts of the one of the earliest churches in the world and perhaps the oldest synagogue in Asia. Adi Sankara, one of the greatest Hindu reformers, also hails from this state. Amazing Kerala. Recommend

    Subruwam swamy says that the muslims of india have the same DNA as hindus but says the muslims are invaders.

    The guy is so confused because he contradicts himself. If muslims are of the sub continent, then did they invade their own country. Rofl.Recommend

    @ghazal:

    I hope you’re not Indian. Because only Pakistanis are so utterly confused and don’t understand secularism and other things.

    The PM of a country NEED NOT visit any mosque or church or temple to prove that the country is secular.

    The PM of a country NEED NOT visit any places of worship, because he is the PM (no matter if the country is secular or not).Recommend

    This mosque was the first mosque build outside Madina during lifetime of Mohammad (P.B.U.H) which proves that Islam was already spreading in India long before Arab and non Arab invaders.Recommend
