Toeing Indian line: Terror as state policy unacceptable, says Merkel

German Chancellor slams Pakistan saying it uses "terror as state policy" to fulfill political objectives.

BERLIN: German Chancellor Angela Merkel has slammed Pakistan for “using terror as state policy” to fulfill its political objectives.

“We will talk to Pakistan that terrorism cannot be a means to end political issues. Terrorism is unacceptable,” said Chancellor Merkel at a joint news conference with visiting Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“India is suffering as a consequence of terrorist attacks. We still remember the attack in Mumbai. At that time we criticised what was done by these perpetrators. We want to do whatever we can to ensure that these terror attacks are not repeated,” said Merkel in reply to a question.

Emphasising the close cooperation between India and Germany in combating global terror, Merkel said: “We are working with India to do whatever we can to see that such terror acts do not take place.”

Merkel said that she discussed with Singh the situation in the Pak-Afghan region.

In the same token all your arguments (although it is exaggerated and plain wrong in many cases) about India are also propagated by your media or for that matter our media who report on various issues we are facing. chandan111 | 13 years ago | Reply First thing is...No body knows what those senior army brass or politicians are doing, but we dont claim to be the only muslim country in the world which was the blessing of allah...haha...all are created by the same allah/ram/jesus... second, i dont care that we are poor, but we are trying to overcome over povery over time, n we dont join terrorism to make my family have 2 meals a day (based on what Kasab had said in the Indian Court)... 20 yrs ago there were more ppl in poverty, but now it is decreasing... some days ago a friend of mine had shown the pics of SWAT and i went to see if our Kashmir had the same flavor... i felt what these sadists are doing,,...they are ruining these beautiful places... i hope pakistan govt learns that it would be a good neighbour and serves its ppl best and make pakistan a world player,, which is so beneficial to the world in general and India in particular... i hope then at least pakistan tells its country men the truth of what it is doing politically diplomatically around the world...it should do the reconciliation with itself... i wish it all the best

We have come a long way since independence. Pakistanis continue to excel in their respective fields bringing honour to the country. We celebrate being a nation of proud and resilient people. Unfortunately most Indians here come with a stereo-typed image of Pakistan and are taken in by the facade their media and government has fed them. Considering that Indians commenting here come from at least educated middle/upper middle class, I was expecting a balanced opinion, but alas, all of you think the same way without exception. Its good to be proud of ones homeland, but nobody has given you any right to degrade/ridicule the other. Please tell me one country where tourists are not targeted by criminals! If the reputation of touring India was "rape capital of tourists", their yearly numbers will be declining. On the other hand, it seems the people of Pakistan are better fed, richer & the cities are cleaner...yet it the majority foreign tourists who come to Pakistan, end up in the mountains of Waziristan.. And what is so degrading about call center agents? I never knew Pakistan is so rich that she has banned call center agents altogether! @Waqas Pakistanis talk loud about the economic benefits and riches they are gonna gain by virtue of their 'strategic location'. But nothing happens. Not even a single major power project have come up in the last 10 years and I have seen Pakistani journalists pleading with Hillary Clinton to arrange funds for dams and thermal power plants as if she is your minister of electricity. After barely 24hrs you can listen to the same journalists blasting her on TV. For the last ten years Pakistanis have been talking about some Gwader port turning into Dubai or Shenzen. Today the government is subsidizing the same port and not a single commercial ship is drawn towards it. Please compare it with Gaudam Adani's Mundra, which he built without Chinese goodies and connecting links to Central Asia, China, Mongolia, Russia, Germany and what not. India has ENTREPRENEURS with stuff. They create value without waiting for the government, the US or Saudi. Maybe entrepreneurship in Pakistan means the ability to drain the exchequers of world capitals??

What do you have to compare: over 40 years of dictatorship, a million bengalis murdered, and the country divided in two after an election, export of terror, and now, a bankrupt economy that goes to the West every few months with a begging bowl - the very same West you cynically accuse of ruining your country! First learn to accept that you have a problem for your own good. You will have made 50% progress. Solving the problems is the other 50%. Subbu Jois | 13 years ago | Reply For those talking about India being Nouvue riche - here are some facts: India and China held about 25% share each of the world economy till 1750 which declined to less than 1% by 1950. Today both the economies are on the ascendant, thanks to their hard work and innovation.The beeline being made by world leaders to India only validates this fact. If an economy can still grow at 9% when 27% of its population are below poverty line, can you imagine when that 27% trends to zero? BTW, China also has about 825 million living in poverty who are alos working their way up. Pak is getting left behind somewhere in the background, tackling the monster that it created!

We recognize our problems and are addressing them, but India is a country with 1.2 Billion who will each have their own opinion and aspirations. While 27% are still below poverty line, an awesome 800 million are surging ahead. The other 400 million will soon follow suit, just taking the trickle effect into consideration. I dont want to sound jingoistic, but India has metrics to prove that India is surging ahead. On the contrary, Pak has metrics to prove to that it is headed in the opposite direction, and your govt is not doing enough to stem the rot. Where do you see yourself in 5,10,20, 50 years. Religion will not feed empty stomachs, but only fan jihadis with blighted visions of Islam and demented views of ruling the world through terror! Time alone will tell who gets where. Waqas | 13 years ago | Reply And... The use of terror as state policy by India, which it did in Bangladesh by raising, arming and supporting (morally, financially and militarily) Mukti Bahini rebels. It continues to give arms and ammunition to Taliban (Pakistani chapter) and Balochs. The fact that they are captured with Indian guns, ammunition; out of the total guns/ammo captured, 70% was Indian and rest was Russian. There are 13 information offices operating in Afghanistan along Pakistan border, what are they doing there? If India is so concerned about Afghanistan, why don't you land your military there? Let him cast the first stone who has not sinned! Shame on you Indians, shame!!

But voila reality is totally opposite. - More than 50% population living in poverty, disease who cant get two square meals a day, this is the biggest chunk of economically disadvantaged people in the world. - The economic stress is creating schisms between religions, castes and sects and provinces. - The human rights abuses in Kashmir, Gujrat, Punjab and elsewhere are on record and continuing. - The largest hegemonic-bullying-demoncracy in the world which tramples on the rights of minorities and goes on regular killing sprees of innocent civilians when they take the street for peaceful protests. This is India for you, the way the world sees it. And then you Indians have the gall to preach us? I feel sorry at the Indian mindset. In India too, the right-wing Bharti Janta party what was believed to be responsible for demolition of the deputed structure at Ayodhya won two elections constitutively. But there 6 years rule did not change the secular credentials of India. In fact, it further strengthen and this is how we reach where we are in this wonderful world. They can't digest the fact that there could have been 1.5 billion Hindus in the sub-continent and now there are less then 0.8 billion Hindus in the sub-continent. And most important they can't digest the fact how a man called Jinnah single-handedly took such a big chunk of of their homeland from them without being jailed once. Afghanistan and Iraq are 20-25 times bigger then Kashmir, they are infected by "radicalism" and there are no more then 0.7 million troops there(NATO+Local Armies combined).

Pak turned its back on its own people, and not for the first time. It happened in 1948, 1971 ( when it butchered over a million Bengalis), Kargil and more. If your own country turn its back on its own people, what future do the people have. You talk about Kashmir - where was your human rights when 1 Million Bengalis were killed by your own security forces and more than 5 million fled to India? We don't need lessons from you on Human rights for starters. Now, Baluchistan is facing the same. First attend to your own problems. My college-mate, a muslim, has a software outsourcing company employing over 100 people and he travels to the US and Canada once in a month. 3 of his brothers are also with him. I asked him about this and he said that he personally did not face any trouble due to his being a Muslim. This is an excuse that is used for convenience. If you are good enough, nobody cares if you are a Christian, Hindu or a Muslim.

The only few mentions that happen about Pak are to do with Terror, natural disasters (floods and earth quakes), corruption by your president, jokes on him, gilani and rehman malik, and the untruths that Mush keeps making to keep himself relevant and in the news. How have you forgotten the split of 1971- Bangladesh lost over 1 million lives due to the atrocities thrust on them by West Pak. Your political class were killing your own countrymen for the sake of power! Do you realize a major paradox in the formation of Pakistan: In 1947, 60 Million Muslims moved to Pak ( combined) and 90 Million stayed back in India! We today have more Muslims in India than you have in Pak. Does it ever dawn on you the the multi-cultural and secular fabric of India does not weaken even when the country got split in three. Other SAARC countries' needs should be given priority. But before that, Pakistanis should make someone like Imran Khan as their president and try to detach themselves from Saudi Arabia (by not entertaining wahabism). They dont care if you drop dead. They have invited Manmohan Singh to speak in their parliament not Zardari or Gilani. So, try to be equal to them rather than following their distorted version of Islam and seeking bailout. Islam should be practised in your home and mosques and not to be involved in state politics by promoting extremism. Like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Srilanka be friends with India instead of trying to be its rival, you will see you are growing. The Pakistan Army has the singular distinction of having failed at each and every endeavor it has participated in, three wars initiated and lost, various interventions in civilian affair fizzled, various covert interventions with no positive result. It seems to have latched onto the policy of using terror and insurgency as a thorn in India's side since it is the only policy that has not overtly failed. Unfortunately, they do not recognize it will never succeed, because the costs the Pakistani economy and people face will eventually bankrupt their ability to subsidize the countries biggest white elephant, the Army. SK | 13 years ago | Reply My Dear Indian bloggers, As much as I could agree with your comments and assesments, I will like to ask what do you call India's brutality in Indian Occupied Kashmir, what do you call India's proven interference in Pakistan's Baluchistan and now in Waziristan areas, I would say that is very much state sponsored terrorism. There are two subtle differences in Pakistan's and India's situation and that is why all these western leaders are dancing to India's music. First, India is a big market, there is no denying that, and now every one of these leaders need that market access- by hook or by crook, hence picking up on easy target to keep India happy. Secondly, there is no doubt that more than India's successful foreignn policy, its Pakistan's failed foreign policies and its diplomats' failures.

India right now has money to buy billions of dollars of product and services from these western countries, these western countries are passing through worst economic crises of their countries since WW2. Faraz | 13 years ago | Reply Angela merkel Is just trying to please indian PM to get some economic incentives,there are numerous indigenous freedom movements in india some of them are Khalistan Movement,Maoist Movement, different local groups in the seven states of Assam with the most prominent being ULFA – United Liberation Front of Assam and the Jammu&Kashmir(j&k).Pakistan being a poor country cannot afford to fund these various groups as India can and it is creating havoc in Balochistan,KP and different parts of Pakistan.

The lies and the half-truths spread by the Pakistani establishment is starting to unravel as evidenced in the recent 'fake leaks. The argument that Pakistan is a victim of terror does not hold water. They created this monster - they shouldn't expect sympathy if it comes back to bite them.
