FAISALABAD: A man jumped into a canal after unidentified men on Sunday set him alight near Samundri Road for refusing to pay protection money, a Batala Colony police spokesman said on Sunday.

SHO Malik Tariq told The Express Tribune that Zafar Ali, a resident of Guru Nanak Pura, was riding a motorbike when he was stopped by some men on Samundri Road near Seth Taufail Foundry.

He said the men poured petrol over him, set him alight and fled.

He said Zafar jumped into Rakh Branch Canal to put out the fire.

He said a Rescue 1122 team reached the scene and shifted the man to a hospital where his condition was stated to be stable.

He said Zafar told them that he had been paying protection money to Bilal and his accomplices for several years.

He said Zafar claimed that they had tried to kill him after he finally refused to pay up.

The SHO said Zafar had not filed a formal complaint about the incident. He said further investigations were underway.
