Shahid Umar said Assistant Commissioner Asim Saleem, TMO Zubair Wattoo, Data Ganj Buksh Town Inspector Bashir Jutt and 15 others raided the Police Club at around 8pm where his walima ceremony was under way. He said that they disrupted the ceremony and confiscated the food prepared for guests.
He said at 9:45pm they ‘allowed’ them to go ahead with the ceremony but told them to wrap it up by 10pm. “They threatened to register an FIR against us,” said the petitioner. “When we asked how that was possible considering there were only 15 minutes left till closing time, we were told that it wasn’t their problem.”
The petitioner said that the guests had to leave the venue without eating food and that had caused him much embarrassment. He also contended that several of his wife’s relatives had opposed the marriage. “Maybe one of them had ordered the raid to disrupt the wedding festivities,” he said.
The petitioner said that he had visited the Racecourse police and had asked them to file his complaint but the SHO had refused. He requested the court to issue police directions to register a case.
