Rs257m spent on PM’s foreign trips during first year in rule

That’s about Rs0.7 million every day between 2013 and 2014

ISLAMABAD: Between May 2013 and June 2014, at least Rs257 million -- or Rs0.7 million per day -- was spent on 15 of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's foreign trips, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The disclosure was made in the ministry's reply submitted to the National Assembly on Monday.

Prime Minister Nawaz's most costly trip was to the US in September 2013 with a total of Rs91.6 million spent.

The prime minister visited the US in October 2013 again, for which around Rs35 million was used from government funds to pay for the trip.

His trip to the UK in May 2014 cost Rs22.2 million.

On November 27, the federal government told the Lahore High Court that at least Rs30.7 million was spent on the premier’s trip to New York.

The deputy attorney general told the court that Parliament had approved a fund for the premier’s foreign tours.
