FAISALABAD: Dozens of people from Chak 494-GB staged a protest demonstration on Sunday against Mamukanjan police.

The protesters, including women and children, carried banners and placards. They staged a protest sit-in front of the Mamukajan Press Club.

Aatya, one of the protesters, said that she and her family were harvesting wheat when a police team, led by SI Nausher, came there. “They stopped us. They misbehaved with my daughters and other family members and forced us to leave the fields. They also drove our cattle to the police station. They arrested my nephew Naseer Ahmad and locked him up without any justification. He was released after we paid Rs13,000. Our cattle have still not been returned,” she said.

The protesters chanted slogans against the police and appealed to the chief minister, the inspector general of police, the regional police officer and the Faisalabad city police officer to take notice of the incident.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Mamukanjan SHO Malik Sanaullah said he had not received any bribes for releasing a suspect.

“I will investigate the claims that the police team misbehaved with women,” he said.

Separately, scores of residents of Chak 23-GB staged a protest against Saddar police on Sunday for not arresting a murder suspect.

The protesters blocked the Jaranwala-Faisalabad Road.

Talking to the reporters, Ali Asghar, one of the protesters, said that his cousin Arshad had been murdered. “We have nominated the suspects. However, the Saddar SHO and the investigation officer are reluctant to take action against them because they have received bribes from them. They are at large and threatening us,” he said. The protesters chanted slogans against police.

Jaranwala DSP Akhtar Ali assured them that the suspects would be arrested. The DSP said that action would be taken against any policeman found to have received a bribe. The protesters then dispersed.

The Saddar SHO said that they were investigating the case. “If the nominees are found guilty in the preliminary investigation, they will be arrested. I have not received any bribe. The complainants are accusing me only to pressure me. They want me to implicate innocent people and arrest them.”
