Career Woes: IGP told to decide regularisation pleas

LAHORE: Lahore High Court on Friday gave the Inspector General of Police (IGP) two months to decide applications seeking regular appointment for constables working in the Punjab Constabulary on contract since 2003. Earlier, a law officer representing the provincial government submitted that a committee had been formed for the purpose. Counsel for petitioners, who joined the Punjab Constabulary on retirement from the Armed Forces of Pakistan in 2003, had submitted that the authorities concerned were considering terminating them from services. He had stated that this was a violation of the government directive stating that employees whose services extended beyond 10 years should be considered for regularisation. He added that there was also a standing order by the chief minister directing all departments to regularise the services of employees hired on contract. The counsel said the petitioners were initially appointed on a five-year contract. Their contracts were later extended.
