KARACHI: Bail was granted to Abdul Jabbar Memon, a former Medico Legal Officer (MLO), who has been accused of raping a Jinnah hospital trainee nurse.

Additional District and Sessions Judge (South) Abdul Razzak granted it against a solvent surety of Rs0.2 million on Friday. Memon filed for bail on Dec 7 when the nurse retracted her earlier statement, accusing him of rape. She was declared a hostile witness on the request of the special public prosecutor.

Memon was dismissed from service by the Sindh government after being charged with sexually assaulting and trying to kill the student of the Jinnah nursing school in the residential area on campus on July 13.

The student deposed that on July 13 one of her colleagues took her to a flat (No F-61) at the doctors’ mess. She said that nobody was there when they entered the two-room flat. She said that her colleague offered her a soft drink and she fell unconscious after consuming it.

She also testified that when she regained consciousness, she found herself in a ward where the police pressured her to nominate someone in the case.

The student told the court at a previous hearing that she did not jump out of the window and she also denied that Memon had pushed her. She has denied that she had either patched up with the accused party or that his relatives had given her compensation. She stated that she had no relationship with Memon before the incident. The court had reserved its order Thursday and announced Friday that bail was granted. The hearing of the main case will take place on Dec 20.
