Army chief emphasises air defence readiness after FM-90 missile system boost

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif on Monday emphasised the importance of air defence in modern warfare, and the need for continuous upgradation of equipment, as well as rigorous training to defeat wide spectrum of threats.

After addressing the officers and troops of Air Defence firing range near Karachi on Monday, the army chief witnessed a demonstration of the Chinese FM-90 air defence missile system which has been recently inducted.

According to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement, the surface-to-air missile system has only recently been inducted into the military and can engage aerial targets including cruise missiles, drones and air-to-surface guided missiles under adverse electronic counter measure (ECM) environments.

Earlier on arrival at firing range, the Army chief was received by Lieutenant General Zahid Latif Mirza, Commander Army Air Defence Command.

The exercise marked the culmination of the induction training of the new system.
